learn to love craigslist...luckily charlotte and raleigh are high-volume cities and their musical instrument classifieds are some of the better ones in the southeast. as far as a cab, get a marshall 1960a/1960b. dont get a marshall mg412 or avt412 or let some retard tell you his crate with celestions ("same as in marshalls!" no) sounds awesome, because he is lying. for 400 or less (ive seen them for 250 beat to shit, but looks dont matter) you can get the industry standard guitar cabinet that will last you a lifetime and sound awesome.
as far as a head goes, you just want a solid and reliable 50 or 100 watt tube head. preferably single-channel, but at the same time if you dont know a lot about amps you want some built in gan. but you want something with not a lot of bells and whistles. you wont use reverb, you wont use a 3-channel 120watt head with matching light up footswitch and christmas tree tremelo reverb zippity-doo-da box, to be honest you wont use most of the shit people advertise as "features." for you i would recommend a peavey ultra plus 120. you can find them on ebay, harmony central, and craigslist pretty often and they are good solid heads for heavier music. a lot like a 5150 but easier on the wallet and cheaper to maintain, you can usually find them for around 350 shipped.
i posted a pretty solid list of amplifiers early, check out everything on that list as well.

don't let the "tubes or death" thing scare you off. there are soooo many great solid state amps out there that cost less than tube amps. It just depends what you're looking for!

thats the thing. when i say i have no clue i really have no clue. ive been playing guitar for like 8 years or something my knowledge of amps is that i plug them in and turn the volume up. i dont know what im looking for, and i dont really even know the difference between the tubes and solid state or any of that shit

that randall halfstack for 200 bucks is an awesome deal. solid state so its got no real maintenance and you'll sound like anything you want. [i've heard this exact amp he's selling a while back and i was impressed.]
i know of an original 5150 for 300 bucks. some good brand names for tube amps are Marshall [anything JCM, DSL, or TSL], Laney, Carvin, Peavey [just don't get a valveking or a windsor, probably better off going solid state with a peavey]
cabwise, i agree with ian 100% really. theres nothing better to start with than a marshall cab if you want something that is guaranteed to last forever and hold its value for life. they sell new for like 800 but you can randomly find them used for anywhere from 200-400 bucks depending on the year it was made and what kind of shape it was in. but ampeg cabs are good if you can find one. definitely get a 4x12 cab though in case you didn't know that already. and follow ian's words of advice.

reading back through this thread i really see what a fucking nerd i am with gear you, me, rick, josh and quite a few others on here are quite the gear nerds. as i was loading all my gear into our storage unit, i realized i have 8 guitars [4 electrics, 2 acoustics, and 2 bass guitars]. i then justified every reason in the world not to get rid of any of them. i own over 30 effects pedals , two amps [jcm 800 and vtm 120], a marshall cab, an avatar cab, a bass/acoustic combo amp, two computers with pro tools, logic, cubase and other recording and sequencing tools, a 200 dollar midi controller and a smoke machine that would choke cheech and chong...
and i'm currently considering a third amp, another combo amp, a 2x12 cab and another marshall cab. does the madness ever end? when will i be content? how in the hell did i start with a $500 toyota pickup truck and end up with all this gear? i mean what the hell happened to us, Ian?

i just got the VTM. i haven't even gotten to play it yet, plus it needs a full set of new tubes, right now i got it running off two 6L6GCs on 60 watts. i love it because its self biasing, UNLIKE my marshall. i got it as a backup/slave. i probably won't buy the 5150 that evan is selling for 300 bucks, so i would suggest someone jump on that one, its the best 5150 i've ever played through.
yeah i got the fernandes [standard tuning, sustainer, great guitar, never getting rid of], the agile lefty [drop d, emgs, never getting rid of.], epiphone lp jr [drop Bb tuning, emg 85x, never getting rid of], sears roebuck old school single coil [slide guitar, gift from a friend, never getting rid of], jb player acoustic [belonged to my dad, hes dead, never getting rid of], ovation acoustic [signed twice by the avett brothers, plays like dick, electic/acoustic, never getting rid of], fender p bass [amazing bass, may one day trade for a geddy lee], vantage lp copy bass [tapewounds, use with cello bow, might get rid of one day if i ever get a compact electric upright bass again].
so i can't really part with shit that i have.

I found a KMD xv100sd for 100 bucks but it needs new tubes. Anyone know anything about them? Worth it? 100 BUCKS? shit. thats a deal as long as thats all it really needs. they sold new for like 250-300 bucks i think so everyone thought they were crap. you can't put shit else in them except 4 KT88s and 5 12AX7s because they had this weird shit where they wouldn't bias for anything else. probably fixed in the later models. hop on that. but just so you know. you turn the gain up too much and its gonna give you funny buzzing sounds unless everything else is on 10 as well. but its a controllable buzz. kinda like some kind of funky alien distortion. but other than that it kinda sounds like a marshall. feedback will happen like a motherfucker though so you will need a noise suppressor no matter what, even for the clean tones. edit: i meant to mention that aside from their cheap price back in the day when they were made, they are imported from england and probably the most rare amp around as far as 100 watt tube amps are concerned. so they still sell for 250-300 on ebay if they ever come up. sometimes more.

just got a letter from EMG today. i'm now endorsed by them. i don't ever even remember asking for an endorsement but apparently i got one. the letter told me that i would soon be recieving an emg 85x for my epiphone les paul junior. how they knew i had a les paul jr is beyond me. how they knew i wanted to put an emg in it is even further beyond me. i currently get 20% off anything EMG as well as 15% off any LTD guitars with EMG pickups in them. so if anyone wants anything let me know and i'll get you a deal. if i buy alot of shit i have a feeling they will send me more free stuff so help me out. i'm broke so i won't be buying shit.

how did you manage to get that? thats so random and awesome the letter didn't say why, it was a letter sent to my moms house in wilkesboro so i guess i applied for it online or something one night when i was drunk. i had an ernie ball endorsement about a year or so ago, but because i didn't send them any promo pics they only sent me one box of ten sets of strings. i'm gonna call someone there tomorrow and see if i can find out more about it. i'm just stoked to see if they really sent me an emg 85x though. cuz thats gonna rule if they did.

i guess they think i'm the guy from white lion. and after reading the letter again it says that i "may qualify" for 15% off the LTDs with EMGs. i guess that means i have to talk to ESP/LTD and tell them i'm endorsed by EMG in order to make that happen. but regardless, 20% off emgs for doing jack shit is cool with me haha.
