hey guys, I am trying to decide on what college to go to this fall, and I was wondering what the general vibe and quality of the Charlotte scene is like nowadays. any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

I love Charlotte

scene is active---a lot of punk and weird stuff, but still a good mix of things altogether. the punk scene is very laid back, fun... everyone is friends with everyone else.

if youre looking at uncc ive heard mixed reviews. the only people i know that go to or went to uncc that are from outside of charlotte tend to not like it, typically. not to say you wouldn't have a great time. but their are other colleges in the area obviouslly. i went to high school in the charlotte area and though my high school sucked i had a great time in charlotte.

My impression of UNCC is that it's like going to college in the mall. Charlotte can be awesome, though.

charlotte was once awesome, then it sucked really bad, recently it had been awesome again, but i feel the "oh god its gonna suck" starting to slowly come back.
the only thing i hate about charlotte is its either REALLY AWESOME for a while or its REALLY TERRIBLE for a long time.
i hope it stays awesome for longer this time before getting shitty again, i really like it and i would hate to break up with it for greensboro

I think any city the size of charlotte can be as good as you make it. charlotte has: sick record store, good restaurants, a good punk club (milestone) a few good houses doing shows, and a group of people making a huge variety of bands. what it doesn't have is any huge/nationally known punk/hardcore bands, any bigger punk labels, or anyone really pushing to get international hardcore and punk bands into town. All of the other southern cities that have thriving punk and hardcore scenes have those three things, and we dont' as much.
my tips: don't live in university area. I did for a long time, and had a great time only because of who I lived with and how cheap rent was.

how cheap is rent in university area? i will be moving down to charlotte in about a year and a half or less. probably a good time to start scouting out a home.

move to plaza midwood instead. you'll save enough money on gas to make up for the small amount more a month

gas? if i drove anywhere it would be to leave town. i planned on riding my bike everywhere.
i can get an apartment in wilkesboro for 500 a month and still have to drive everywhere or i can get a small house in charlotte for 600 a month or less and ride my bike everywhere.

the ride from university to plaza-midwood is miserable, and you can get a small house in our hood

yeah now that i think about it. that would be one fucking shitlog of a ride. living anywhere within the plaza sugar creek area would probably be my best bet for price and location even though most would consider it to be ghetto as fuck.

UNCC is great if you're coming here. I've loved it so far. People tend to come out to shows in the Charlotte area it seems. Also there is great food.

Yeah, don't move to the Uni area if you're planning on riding your bike to P-Midwood a lot. You'll have to get on either Tryon or Old Concord or WT Harris and you couldn't possibly pick worse roads in Charlotte than those three to bike on.

Mike, I'm a recent transplant from Atlanta, and to tell you the truth I love it. I actually dig it more than Atlanta. It's a city that's got pretty much everything you could want. Great record store, awesome food, rad venues, and it's relatively biker friendly. It would be rad if there was a way to get some bigger punk/hardcore bands here. But, take what you can get because other cities that get bigger shows aren't too far away.

I'd be down, what instrument do you play? I play guitar, bass, and sing. but I prefer guitar. I'm hoping to do something that mixes stuff like Husker Du, Descendents, Joy Division, Fucked Up, Rites of Spring, Buzzcocks, Fugazi, etc.

haha its a pretty eclectic mix. If i can get it to sound like how it sounds in my head then I think it could be pretty rad.

UNCC is a college. no worse than other colleges. I hated it here and now I love it, if you like those bands you'll have no problem starting bands. awesome. do it!

i've lived in charlotte since 2006 and like it a good deal. i didn't mind UNCC. i didn't have much of a "college" experience but it wasn't like i wanted to join frats or go to games and that seems to be the whole college thing.
we have a lot of cool venues in the area and all of them have something at one point or another. if you need a list of places to check out here it goes...
venue/spaces: lunchbox records, milestone, snug harbor, tremont, sewercide every once and a while there is cool stuff (depending on what you are into) at these places: neighborhood theatre, visulite, and amos'.
i don't want to necessarily post local bands because there are a lot of them. there is a decent mixture and for the most part, in recent years, a lot of us are pretty cordial to one another even if the styles are way different (as it should be). there are a few awesome punk bands, indie bands, and other stuff that is relatively diy and independent that doesn't necessarily fall into the first two categories.
there is sometimes a lack of international//national acts coming through when compared to other cities but i think we have it pretty good. lots of good shows in raleigh, greensboro, and asheville as well.
hope you have fun.

Mike, are you living in a dorm? and if so, what dorm? PM if you're trying to chill and make some music. I'm up here.
